The Top 5 drug movies of 2007 Print E-mail

1. Alpha Dog

Directed by Nick Cassavetes

JT & EHMarijuana is the main character in this true story about Johnny Truelove (Emile Hirsch), a Southern California weed dealer who kidnaps the 15-year-old brother (Anton Yelchin) of a lowlife rival (Ben Foster). Truelove and his stoner buds (Justin Timberlake, Shawn Hatosi) conspire to kill the kid rather than face kidnapping charges. Pot's portayal is less than favorable, contributing to a sociopathic lifestyle. But bongs and joints are puffed throughout and cannabis is even cultivated in one of the parents' backyards.

2. Knocked Up

Directed by Judd Apatow

Seth Rogen graduates from supporting roles in The 40 Year Old Virgin and You, Me and Dupree to star in Apatow's rom-com about an unlikely couple (Rogen and Katherine Heigl) who conceive a baby. The first half of the movie is hilarious - with Rogen (Ben Stone) and his dopey friends sitting around smoking and watching soft-core porn. (In one scene, Rogen dons a gas-mark pipe.) But in hopes of growing closer to Heigl (Alison), Ben needs to pull away from his carefree existence, which is the movie's big bummer.

3. Across the Universe

Directed by Julie Taymor

ERWDespite being criticaly reviled, this Beatles musical hits all the right notes. Starring Evan Rachel Wood (Lucy) and Jim Sturgess (Jude) as teenaged lovers in the '60s, the film revisits 33 Beatles classics with fantastic choreography and psychedelic settings. Bono's "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and Eddie Izzard's "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite" are highlights, but Wood and Sturgess do most of the singing. Pot and acid figure into the storyline about radical politics in an idealistic era.

4. Factory Girl

Directed by George Hickenlooper

Also set in the '60s, Sienna Miller plays Edie Sedgwick, one of Andy Warhol's muses who sweeps into the Factory scene with a flourish but is soon exiled by the jealous Warhol (Guy Pearce) after she hooks up briefly with Bob Dylan (Hayden Christensen). Speed is the Warholites' drug of choice, so when Dylan offers Warhol a joint and he attempts to refuse it, the clash of countercultures heightens.

5. American Gangster

Directed by Ridley Scott

AGThe heroin plague of the '70s is romanitcized in this epic about Frank Lewis (Denzel Washington), who runs the dope trade in Harlem. Hazy shoot-up scenes precede Lewis' downfall at the hands of one dogged New York cop (Russell Crowe) who sniffs out his scheme to smuggle China White from Thailand in dead soldiers' caskets.

Best Pot Scene

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

Dewey (John C. Reilly) discovers his drummer (Tim Meadows) smoking a "reefer" and inquires innocently if it will: 1) give him a hangover, 2) get him addicted, and 3) make want to have sex. Meadow's answers are hysterical. Watch video clip
