Heath Ledger is the second actor to die mysteriously in 2008. First Brad Renfro and now the star of Brokedown Mountain, whose body was found at his New York apartment on Jan. 22. Police discovered pills leading to suspicion that Ledger overdosed.
Born on April 4, 1979 in Perth, Australia, Ledger got his start as a teen actor on Australian TV series before starring in 10 Things I Hate About You in 1999.
After roles in The Patriot (2000), Monster's Ball (2000), A Knight's Tale (2001), Ned Kelly (2003 and Casanova (2003), Ledger teamed up with Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback Mountain. Ledger earned Academy Award and Golden Globe nomimations for his portrayal of introverted gay cowboy, Ennis.
He met Michelle Williams during the filming of Brokeback. They moved to Brooklyn, NY and had a child, Matilda, However, Williams and Ledger split up this past August.
Also in 2005, Ledger appeared in Lords of Dogtown as Skip, the surfboard/skate shop proprietor. In 2006, he played a heroin addict in Candy, with Abbie Cornish, and in 2007 was one of six actors to depict Bob Dylan in I'm Not There. He's The Joker in Dark Knight, the latest Batman sequel, which will be released in July.
Most recently, Ledger was linked to Aussie model Gemma Ward.
