Ashford & Simpson's first hit song was "Let's Go Get Stoned," originally recorded by the Coasters in 1965, and covered by Ray Charles in 1966 and Joe Cocker in 1969. Nick Ashford passed away yesterday from throat cancer. He was 69.

As a tribute to Zach Galifianakis and his love of all things watermelon, we've posted the 1973 electronic version of "Watermelon Man" from Herbie Hancock's "Head Hunters" album. Hancock originally recorded the Mongo Santamaria song for his debut solo album, "Takin' Off," in 1962.

The passing of Gil Scott-Heron on May 27 is sad in so many ways. The great jazz poet of the '70s and '80s suffered from crack addiction, which landed him in jail several times. Despite being his generation's Chuck D, few of today's music fans know about Scott-Heron. Now, with his death at 62, perhaps they will.

Bobby Hebb, who passed away from lung cancer on Aug. 3, said he "was intoxicated" when he wrote "Sunny"in 1963. Over the years it's been covered by everyone from James Brown to Jamiroquai.

George Clinton was kind enough to contribute crowd favorite "Dope Dog" to "Hempilation 2" in 1998. It's of course the funkiest track on the album. "Never do he do a line in the line of duty," Clinton sings. "He's a dope dog."
