Now we know why Rep. Barney Frank is so emphatic about reforming marijuana laws. Two years ago his boyfriend James Ready was busted for growing pot in Maine. Charged with possession and cultivation, Ready paid a fine. Frank, who says, "I've never smoked marijuana," wasn't charged.

Marijuana plant seizures soared in California in 2009. CAMP reports that nearly 4.5 million plants were pulled, compared to 2.9 million in 2008. The state's leading pot-growing counties are Shasta, Lake, Mendocino, Fresno, Los Angeles and Trinity.

Move over Lake County, California has a new leading marijuana producer. CAMP reports that 558,000 plants were seized in Shasta County this year, compared to 507,000 for Lake. In 2008, Lake led all of the state's 58 counties.

Maine voters have amended their 10-year-old medical-marijuana law "to allow the treatment of more conditions and to create a regulated system of distribution," meaning dispensaries. Question 5 passed by with 61% of the vote. In Breckenridge, Colorado, Measure 2F was approved by a 73% margin. It legalizes the possession of up to one ounce of marijuana, and decriminalizes the sale and possession of paraphernalia.

British researcher Prof. David Nutt, who was sacked last week from the Council on the Misuse of Drugs by the Home Office because of his paper, "Estimating Drug Harms," rates marijuana the 11th most harmful drug, behind heroin, cocaine, alcohol and tobacco.

The City of Berkeley has declared Oct. 31 "Berkeley Patients Group Day" in celebration of the Bay Area dispensary's 10th anniversary. "They've been a wonderful neighbor," says Councliman Daryl Moore. "The place is clean, they have good security and the neighbor's don't complain."
