Tommy Chong not stoked about Biden selection Print E-mail

In an August 21 interview with the Washington Post, Tommy Chong was asked what the average citizen can do to further the cause of decriminalization. "Check out the people you're voting for," Chong replied. "For instance, Joseph Biden comes off as a liberal Democrat, but he's the one who authored the bill that put me in jail. He wrote the law against shipping drug paraphernalia through the mail - which could be anything from a pipe to a clip or cigarette papers."Joe Biden

Barack Obama's V.P. selection Sen. Joe Biden also sponsored the Rave Act, which targets music events where drug use is allegedly prevalent.

About medical marijuana, Biden said iin 2007: "We have not devoted nearly enough science or time to deal with the pain management and chronic pain management that exists. There’s got to be a better answer than marijuana. There's got to be a better answer than that. There's got to be a better way for a humane society to figure out how to deal with that problem."

Biden coined the term "drug czar" and has championed the Office for National Drug Control Policy.

On a more positive note, Biden introduced a bill that would eliminate the discrepancy between crack and cociane sentencing in federal cases. The curent ratio is 100:1. In other words, 500 grams of cocaine equals five grams of crack; possession of either is punishable by a five-year sentence

"I have long regarded Biden as an opponent of the cause for reasons like Tommy says, and more," offers Drug Policy Alliance executive director Ethan Nadelmann, "but I was surprised when he was the one who introduced the 1:1 crack/powder reform bill this year, which leapfrogged the more modest reforms put forward by Sens. Kennedy, Hatch and others. I'm not sure whether to take it as a sign of a more general opening up on his part, or just a play for the African-American vote in the primaries. But at least Biden isn't entirely bad news for drug policy."

What do you think of Obama's choice of Biden for his running mate?

Nothing will change
written by j davis , September 08, 2008

This is why, for the first time in 40 years, I will be staying home on election day! I have been voting all my life and NOTHING has changed and none of the current candidates are committed to any kind of real change. The drug war will go on and the casualties will continue to mount. I would like to be optimistic but life experience tells me otherwise.

Biden has only stated increduously that "there must be a better answer than marijuana" he has never cosponsored or voted medical marijuana issueshttp://granitestaters.com/candidates/joe_biden.html. this man is for decriminalization and has vowed to end drug raids in states that have legalized it.

Say NO to all mainstream candidates...
written by moldy , August 25, 2008

That Biden choice just turned me off! Anyway, we need to vote Libertarian. Why? Why not! Both of the mainstream media sexed-up candidates are just that. Barr / Root so I can live with myself.

Joe Biden

As long as drug companies control
drug policy,we are going to have to
live with this stupid game of don't
smoke pot get a boner with Viagra.
If I have a presciption for oxy.it's
alright if I piss hot. If I have a
prescription for pot I'm a suspect.
Other than people like Barney Frank
there doesn't seem to be a voice to
change these diabolical policies.
Polititions seem to act in collusion with powers which hurt people. Educating them seems to only
offend their thin egos.
I wonder if they care how offensive
their policies are.
Thanks, Dave

written by www.infowars.com , August 24, 2008

Barack is not for legaliation, he mentioned that he may be for decrim which as you know is still prosecuting smokers in possession of over certain amounts of cannabis. Wake the fuck up people, Obama and McCain might as well be running with eachother. Their both a couple of crooked ass whack jobs that will do us and the U.S. no good.

but...

at least he's not a dick.

Don't believe this! Look at the full quote!
written by Matthew Gordon , August 23, 2008

This article is total stupidity. Did McCain write this himself?

Look at the full quote: http://granitestaters.com/cand...biden.html

Joe Biden isn't so bad on medical marijuana. The article totally misquotes him. Don't be fooled into voting for the republicans by this crap!

"kinda confusing"...?
written by dont you know? , August 23, 2008

"...I just hope Obama doesn't become corrupted."
i don't want whatever you are smoking, man. he's as corrupt as all of them. put the bunk down, man!

Kinda confusing
written by Excelion , August 23, 2008

Obama is for medical marijuana and Biden is against it, I think Biden may try to convince Obama to stay away from the marijuana issue and we will have to wait even longer to get ower medicine legal, I just hope Obama doesn't become corrupted.

Though it does upset me that he is against medical marijuana (when was that quote stated) he brings a lot more good than bad.

Give him a try. Do research on other things that are important to you and then make an informed decision.

I hope that Barack will ease up on the DEAs daily attacks on dispensaries and allow SOMEONE to do an unbiased study on the benefits of marijuana, both short and long-term. It really is getting out of hand.
