Bernie Sanders: Remove Marijuana from the CSA

At Bernie Sanders' rally in New York's Washington Square Park last night, the Senator doubled down on his opinion that marijuana should be de-scheduled - meaning taken off the Controlled Substances Act altogether.

At about the 1:50 mark of the video about, he stated:

'The truth is we have to rethink the so-called War on Drugs. Over the last 30 years, millions of Americans have received police records for possession of marijuana. Today, marijuana is a Schedule I drug under the federal Controlled Substances Act. I believe that we should remove marijuana from the federal Controlled Substances Act. States determine whether they want to legalize marijuana or not, but it should not be a federal crime.'

Sen. Sanders' bill - the Ending Federal Prohibition of Marijuana Act of 2015 - would remove marijuana and THC from the CSA. Both are currently listed as Schedule I drugs, which are considerd the most harmful and with no medical use.

Last year, in a letter to Pres. Obama, 18 House reps asked that he instruct the Attorney General to "delist marijuana or classify it in a more appropriate way."

Sanders' opponent, Hillary Clinton, recently said, "Let's take it off Schedule I and put it on a lower schedule."

Speakers that preceded Sanders at Washington Square Park included celebs Tim Robbins, Spike Lee and Rosario Dawson. Vampire Weekend also performed a four-song acoustic set. Check out more Celebrities for Sanders.
