Drug Suspensions Galore: NFL and NBA Sock It to Numerous Players

Eleven NFL players are either currently suspended or will be suspended for the start of the 2016 season. In the NBA, guard O.J. Mayo (two years) and forward Mitch McGary (five games) have been banned. All ran afoul of the leagues' drug-use policies.

NFL

• Bills RB Karlos Williams - 4 games for substance-abuse violations.

• Cowboys LB Rolando McClain - 10 games for substance abuse violations; suspended for four games in 2015.

• Cowboys DE DeMarcus Lawrence - four games for substance abuse (amphetamines) violations.

• Cowboys OT Randy Gregory - four games for substance abuse (marijuana) violations.

• Packers DT Mike Pennel - four games for substance abuse violations.

• Jets DE Sheldon Richardson - one game for violating personal conduct policy; suspended four games for substance abuse (marijuana) in 2015.

• QB Johnny Manziel (free agent) - four games for substance abuse violations.

• Steelers WR Martavis Bryant - 16 games for substance-abuse violations; suspended for four games in 2015.

O.J. Mayo

• Panthers DE Frank Alexander - 16 games (starting Nov. 24) for substance abuse (marijuana) violations.

• Raiders LB Aldon Smith - 16 games (starting Nov. 17) for substance abuse and personal conduct violations.

• Browns WR Josh Gordon - 16 games (starting Feb. 2015) for substance abuse; failed drug test in April 2016.

A total of 26 NFL players were suspended going into the 2015 season.

NBA

• Bucks guard O.J. Mayo - two years four violating drug policy; suspended 10 games in 2011 for PED.

• Thunder forward Mitch McGary - five games for violating drug policy; suspended for one season at University of Michigan for positive drug test for pot.
