An eclectic slice of music history, Bound to Lose chronicles the ups and downs of New York's folk pranksters, the Holy Modal Rounders. Best known for "If You Want to Be a Bird," which appeared on the Easy Rider soundtrack, the Rounders were founded by Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber during the '60s psychedelic era (actor/ playwright Sam Shepard was their original drummer). Much of the movie has a "Where's Steve?" focus, since the bearded singer disappears a lot. Stampfel has held the group together over the years, and this documentary by Sam Wainwright Douglas and Paul C. Lovelace certainly shines the light back on the Rounders.

Julie Taymor's Across the Universe was one of the best films of 2007. Beatles fans will love it and everyone else should appreciate this entertaining, evocative and mindbending '60s musical.
