Review: 'Kid Cannabis'

Bryce Hodgson and Jonathan Daniel Brown stop for a weed break during a smuggling run in "Kid Cannabis."

Smuggling stories are all the rage these days in Hollywood and publishing. Kid Cannabis portrays a real tale about an operation from Canada to Idaho that made a bunch of stoners rich.

Jonathan Daniel Brown stars as Nate Norman, a pudgy pot head who has dreams of moving hundred of pounds across the porous US.-Canada border. He cooks up the plan with his BFF Topher (Kenny Wormald). They recruit friends to join them in their cannabis-fueled adventure.

Several scenes at the border are funny, with the guys routinely getting strip-searched, then released. When they're pulled over by a Canadian cop, it could be a scene right out of Super Troopers.

Nate and Topher find a master grower, played by John C. McGinley of Scrubs fame, who loads them up with high-end product. Nate makes a deal with an Israeli backer (Ron Perlman of Sons of Anarchy fame), and soon they're rolling in the dough, partying like crazy, buying cars - all the usual trademarks of a get-rich-quick scheme.

When local drug dealer tough guy Brendan Butler (Aaron Yoo) doesn't take too kindly to the new competition, the movie takes a dark left turn. The guys start doing coke rather then weed. One of Nate's team gets greedy and the Feds eventually step in.

Directed by John Stockwell (Into the Blue, Turistas), Kid Cannabis is way better than your average B stoner movie. Brown, who co-starred in Project X, nails the lead part, even if he looks like Flounder from Animal House's kid brother. Though the plants in the grow room are fake, a quick scene packaging dry buds looks real.
