Fate Winslow spent 12 years in Louisiana prisons for possessing $20 worth of marijuana. He was released from Angola State Prison in December.

Update: Innocence Project New Orleans says Winslow was killed in Shreveport on May 5, according to Winslow' attorney Jee Park.

Homeless, Winslow sold $20 of weed to an undercover cop in Shreveport in 2008. A petty criminal, he'd been preeviously arrested twice for burglary and once for cocaine possession. The judge threw the book at Winslow, sentencing him to life in prison without parole.

Innocence Project New Orleans and Last Prisoner Project took up Winslow's case. "He received an obscenely excessive sentence given his life circumstances and crime, and today we're correcting that unconstitutional, inhumane sentence," Park stated on December 16.

Winslow was 53.
