One of Hollywood's favorites actors, Johnny Depp has portrayed Hunter S. Thompson several times - in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and The Rum Diary - as well as the drug smuggler in Blow.

Born on June 9, 1963 in Owensburg, Kentucky (his hero Thompson is also a Kentuckian), Depp appeared on TV's 21 Jump Street before his film career took off with breakout roles in Edward Scissorhands, Benny & Joon and What's Eating Gilbert Grape? He's since starred in Ed Wood, Don Juan DeMarco, Dead Man, Donnie Brasco, Sleepy Hollow, From Hell, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Public Enemies, Alice in Wonderland, The Tourist and the four Pirates of the Caribbean films as Jack Sparrow, a character he based on Keith Richards.

Depp told Film Review, "I'm not a great pothead or anything like that… but weed is much, much less dangerous than alcohol."

In 2004, he caught flack for saying it would be better if his kids smoked pot with him. "I was talking about specifically marijuana," Depp explained. "Rather than have them go out on the street and get some nasty, potentially fatal stuff, I would rather say, 'Look, this is marijuana. I know where it came from. And if you really need to try it, try it here in the house and be safe.' They immediately misconstrued it, like I was prepared to go out and score all kinds of drugs for my kids. It was just ludicrous."

In 2020, Depp said he got his daughter Lily-Rose stoned on pot when she was 13.

Depp split up with his girlfriend and mother of Lily-Rose and Jack, Vanessa Paradis, in 2012. They were together since 1998. Depp married actor Amber Heard in 2015. They were divorced in 2016.
