In 1972, for his third album, David Peel recruited John Lennon and Yoko Ono to produce The Pope Smokes Dope. The album, featuring the title song, was released by Apple Records.

The pope smokes dope, God gave him the grass
The pope smokes dope, he likes to smoke in mass
The pope smokes dope, he's a groovy head
The pope smokes dope, the pope smokes dope.

Peel's debut album, Have a Marijuana, was released by Elektra Records in 1968. He followed up with The American Revolution on Elektra in 1970. Peel's friendship with Lennon and Ono led him to Apple, the Beatles' label. They met Peel in 1971 when he was performing in New York's Washington Square Park. He's long played and recorded with a loose contingent of musicians known as the Lower East Side.
