Tom Petty hasn't has a hit single since the pot-themed "You Don't Know How It Feels" 20 years ago. He may have another one with "U Get Me High."
The song is off Hypnotic Eye, Petty's first album since Mojo in 2010. It's being released July 29. Petty is launching a summer tour on Aug. 3 in support of the album. Steve Winwood is the tour opener.
Petty fans will recall a song called "You Get Me High" that appeared on the Playback compilation in 1995. The two songs bear the same name but are hardly comparable. The third verse after the guitar break on "U Get Me High" goes:
I ain’t afraid of what people say
Ain’t afraid of the great deception
Every bad dream comes my way
Trying to smoke on closer inspection
On "You Get Me High" (listen below), Petty sings:
Let's have another joint on me
Let's get as gone as we can be
And we'll float around the sea
Cause you get me high
And on "You Don't Know How It Feel," Petty famously sings:
Let's get to the point
And roll another joint
