• "Stop driving players to drink," a billboard paid for by the MPP declared in Denver. The campaign is directed at the NFL's strict substance-abuse policy.

• The NFL opened the season with 13 players sidelined by suspensions for using illegal drugs, in most cases marijuana.

• The NBA suspended Top Sixth Man J.R. Smith for failing a third drug test for marijuana.

• John McCain stated at a town meeting, "Maybe we should legalize. We're certainly moving that way as far as marijuana is concerned."
