Whoopi Goldberg calls her vape pen "Sippy."

The View host may be the most famous celebrity vaper. A glaucoma sufferer, Whoopi Goldberg wrote in The Cannabist in 2014: “The vape pen has changed my life. No, I’m not exaggerating. In fact, her name is Sippy. Yes, she’s a she. And yes, I named her Sippy because I take tiny, little sips – sassy sips, even – from her. And with each sip comes relief – from pressure, pain, stress, discomfort.

“These glaucoma-induced headaches come on like freight trains – like, BOOM, my head starts hurting, my eyes start bugging, my whole body starts to tense up. But then I find her, and it relaxes everything and calms everything. It helps my head stop hurting, and with glaucoma your eyes ache, and she takes the ache out. It’s wonderful.

“The high is different, too. It feels like a gentle, warm breeze at the beach. It’s like someone undoing a vice grip, very slowly. It’s not overpowering – and I’m certainly not looking for that high high. I’m looking for relief."

The comedian who became an A-list actor in films like The Color Purple and Ghost, for which she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, was introduced to vaporizers after smoking joints proved to harsh for her lungs. Goldberg’s daughter brought her a desktop vaporizer to try out, which she found delivered smoother hits than a joint. But she had trouble operating it when her daughter wasn’t around. Two months later her daughter brought her a vape pen, which was simpler to use. Vaporizer pens generally feature a single-button interface making it easier to operate than desktop units.

Goldberg has since started her own canna-product line for women: Whoopi & Maya.
