Phish Drummer Selected to Serve Office in Maine

He may be known for wearing a dress and rolling a vacuum on stage when he's not drumming, but that hasn't stopped Phish's Jon Fishman from diving into politics in the small Maine town of Lincolnville, where he lives.

On June 14, Fishman was elected to become a member of Lincolnville's selectboard, hence making him a selectman, which is akin to being on a city council. He received 356 votes.

Fishman, who supported Sen. Bernie Sanders' presidential run, was inspired by the Vermont Congressman. "Bernie was saying, 'Look at all of you people who go on the Sanders campaign and care about these issues – you should run for your local offices, your school boards and committees,'" the drummer said about his reason for running. "Public service is needed across the board, so I guess that kind of sentiment just sat with me."

Phish are currently in the midst of their 13-show "Baker's Dozen" run at New York's Madison Square Garden, from July 21 to Aug. 6. Each night the band is giving phans a different flavored donut, courtesy of Philadelphia's Federal Donuts – the perfect antidote for the munchies.
