"I died in the jungle last week," pop star Machine Gun Kelly tweeted in May. "I feel what it is to be reborn."
MGK went to Costa Roca with Megan Fox, the actress revealed two months later on Jimmy Kimmel Live, with Arsenio Hall guest hosting.
Fox launched into a long explanation about the couple's ayahuasca retreat "in the middle of the jungle."
At first she thought it was going to be a five-star glamping experience, but that wasn't to be the case. "You don't get to eat after 1 pm," Fox explained. "You have to walk really far to get your water. You can't shower because they're in a drought. Obviously, you have to respect the rainforest."
Megan Fox: "It's your own psychological hell. That's the point of the medicine."
According to ayahuasca expert Peter Gorman: "It's a brew made by combining ayahuasca vine with chacruna (a plant in the coffee family) or huambisa infused with the smoke of regional black tobacco, in river water. It's known by a host of names - yajé and natem among them - depending on which indigenous group is talking about it.
"As popular as ayahuasca has become it's unlikely to catch on as a club drug because most people who drink it spend a good portion of the ceremony vomiting up the bile of their lives in an uncontrollable manner."
Indeed, Fox devoted a significant part of the interview (cue to 4:40 in the clip above) talking about just that, the physical purging (in front of 20 strangers, in this case) that's required to participate in the ceremony. "You drink lemongrass tea until, not by your own volition, you vomit everything out of your body. They cheer on everybody as they throw up."
Fox admitted it "sounds crazy, but that gets you reedy to go into the ceremony that night because your vanity's gone. I've just done this in front of these strangers - now I'm really ready to open up."
It took until the second night for her to have a breakthrough. "It was incredibly intense," Fox reported. "I went to hell for eternity... It's your own psychological hell. That's the point of the medicine.
"This is a medicine that surpasses anything you can do with talk therapy or hypnotherapy or any of those things. It just goes straight into your soul and it takes you to the psychological prison that you hold yourself in and I was definitely there."
For his part, Kelly simply tweeted, "Plant medicine."

Fox has said on several occasions that cannabis should be legalized. "I can't tell you how much bullshit I've been through because I will openly say that I smoke weed," she railed.
The Tennessee-born actress appeared in the first two Transformers movies, Jennifer's Body, Jonah Hex, This Is 40 and Rogue.
Fox's marriage to Brian Austin Green ended in 2020, the same year she started dating Machine Gun Kelly (nee Colson Baker).
Fox smoked a joint onstage with MGK at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana on May 28.
All five of MGK's albums have reached the Top 10. He scored a No. 4 hit with "Bad Things" in 2016. MGK recently was named the Top Rock Artist of 2021 by the Billboard Music Awards.
