Houseplant Ditches Canopy Growth Despite Strong Sales in Canada

Seth Rogen and Houseplant’s popular Grapefruit Seltzer Water infused beverage.

Comic actor Seth Rogen's cannabis company Houseplant got its start in Canada in 2019, but in the last year the focus has swung to California with a strong launch in February. With that in mind, they've reached a separation agreement with Canopy Growth, their Canadian partner.

"Canada is where it all started - for us as people, and for the brand," says Vancouver native Rogen in a press release. "This is not an exit from the Canadian market, but a chance for us to evolve the brand."

Houseplant's Grapefruit Sparkling Water is currently the sixth most popular infused beverage in Ontario, according to Headset.

"More than one million cans of Houseplant beverages were sold in Canada within the last year," the release adds.

"While our collaboration with the Canopy team has been fruitful and we continue to hold similar views on the opportunities ahead, we believe the time is right for us to focus on Houseplant independently," comments Houseplant CEO Michael Mohr.

Canopy agrees that the timing is right for both parties. "As we move forward, Canopy will advance our focus on our wholly-owned brands for the Canadian market and we wish the Houseplant team the best in their future endeavors," Canopy's President and CPO Rade Kovacevic says.

Less than two months ago, Toronto-based rapper Drake and Canopy ended a similar partnership. Among celebrities, Martha Stewart and her Her Martha Stewart CBD company remain affiliated with Canopy.

In addition to Houseplant's line of premium flower, they offer cool accessories like ashtrays, lighters, matchboxes, turntables and mixtapes.
