Diane Keaton Says She 'Missed Out' on Mushrooms in the '60s and '70s

Diane Keaton in "Mack & Rita" (2022) and "Annie Hall" (1977

According to Cinema Blend, Diane Keaton is ranked the No. 6 "greatest movie pothead" of all time. That's because she played a stoner in 1977's Annie Hall. After she and Alvy (Woody Allen) have sex, Annie lights up a joint.

Alvy: Yeah, grass, right? The illusion that it will make a white woman more like Billie Holiday.

Annie: Well, have you ever made love high?

Alvy : Me? No. I - I, you know, If I have grass or alcohol or anything, I get unbearably wonderful. I get too wonderful for words. I don't know why you have to get high every time we make love.

Annie: It relaxes me.

Alvy: You have to be artificially relaxed before we can go to bed?

Annie Hall: Well, what's the difference anyway?

Alvy Singer: Well, I'll give you a shot of sodium pentathol. You can sleep through it.

Annie Hall: Oh come on. Look who's talking. You've been seeing a psychiatrist for 15 years. You should smoke some of this. You'd be off the couch in no time.

Alvy doens't and later in the film famously sneezes on a pile of coke.

Keaton won the Academy Award for her Best Actress performance in Annie Hall.

In 2014, Elle wrote: "It's high time [Keaton} gets her due as a Stoner Babe icon."

Tokin Woman reports: "Keaton also smokes pot on film (in a bathtub) in 1982's Shoot the Moon. In 2005, she appeared as the cancer-stricken matriarch of The Family Stone, in which she takes 'special' medicinal brownies."

In her latest movie, Mack & Rita, Mack (Keaton, who is 76) takes mushrooms, which prompted the following question from Variety's Marc Malkin: "When was the last time you did shrooms?"

Keaton: "No, thank you! That was never something that I engaged in at all. I missed out on that. I would prefer just to have a glass of wine with ice in it. I don’t want to go there. I like ice and that’s fun, but no, that’s not fun. That’s scary. I don’t want to do that."

Then there's this 2020 tweet from actor Jason Toler:
