Peyote Talk with Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Stephen Colbert

Lily Tomlin is a shaman and she and her acting partner and friend Jane Fonda have taken peyote together, we learned on The Late Show on Mar. 9.

Tomlin and Fonda were there to hype their new comedy Moving On, which will be in theaters Mar. 17.

Three minutes into the interview, host Stepehn Colbert asked: "You guys have done peyote together. A lot of people are microdosong. What was that experience like?"

Tomlin

I microdose. She's not that advanced.

Colbert

Are you microdosing right now?

Tomlin

Yeah, of course.

Colbert

Would you all recommend the effects of peyote?

Fonda

I've always had really good experiences with peyote. But the time we took it together it was horrible. I was totally paranoid. It was the worst. But I love it. But I wouldn't do peyote unless you're with a guide or someone who can kind of...

Tomlin

A shaman, as I am.

Colbert

Do you think it would be good for me?

Fonda

Yes. I think you need a little quiet peyote. I'll be your guide.

Peyote buttons, as they're known, grow on a cactus plant which contains the hallucinogen, mescaline. When consumed, it has a powerful effect. The peyote cactus is native to Northern Mexico and Texas. Sacramental use by members of the Native American Church is permitted. Otherwise, peyote is listed federally as a Schedule I drug, meaning it has a "high potental for abuse."

Fonda and Tomlin recently teamed up with Rita Moreno and Sally Field in 80 for Brady. The duo starred in the Netflix series Grace and Frankie from 2015-2022. In the first episode, they drank peyote tea.

In 2015, Fonda said about peyote: "It’s not my drug of choice. I’ve never had any profound visions, but many of my friends have. You see incredible shapes and colors and patterns, and sometimes you have cosmic breakthroughs. I haven’t."

In the 1980 comedy 9 to 5Tomlin famously shares a joint of Maui Wowie with Fonda and and Dolly Parton.
