The second leg of Willie Nelson's 2025 Outlaw Music Festival begins Friday at Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston, MI with Bob Dylan and others on the bill. But Nelson won't be smokling his favorite herb before and after the show.
"I can’t smoke anything anymore," the country music legend tells Forbes. "My lungs have already said, “Don’t do that.” So, I don’t really do anything now much except a few edibles."
That's because Nelson, a longtime tobacco smoker before he switiched to pot, suffers from emphysema.
“I've abused my lungs quite a bit in the past, so breathing is a little more difficult these days and I have to be careful," he said in 2019. “I mistreated myself since I was this big. I started smoking cedar bark, went from that to cigarettes to whatever. And that almost killed me. I take better care of myself today than I did then."
That summer several Outlaw Music Fest shows were canceled due to what Nelson called "a breathing problem." The same thing happened the year before.
He skipped eight 2024 Outlaw Music dates, but no shows were canceled as his son Lukas filled in for him. Nelson has been healthy so far this spring.
Forbes asked if he's been drinking THC instead of smoking or vaping it.
"I think it’s good, the people like it from what I’ve seen and heard. It’s getting to be pretty popular out there. I don’t do a lot. My wife [Annie] does a lot for it. She works hard and talks to a lot of people, and I nod my head a lot and say, 'Yes, thank you.'"
His company Willie's Remedy – an offshoot of Willie's Reserve – has a new hemp-derived beverage dubbed "Social Tonic."
