When Dawn Wells - Mary Ann on 'Gilligan's Island' - Was Busted for Marijuana

Dawn Wells, 1938-2020

Gilligan's Island co-star Dawn Wells, who played Mary Ann and passed away on December 30, was arrested for marijuana possession in 2007.

When Idaho police stopped her car for swerving in Driggs on the night of Wells' 69th birthday on October 18, 2007, they detected the smell of marijuana. Four partially smoked joints were found in the car. Wells claimed she'd picked up a few hitchhikers who smoked in the vehicle.

Wells was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of paraphernalia, driving under the influence (she failed a field-sobriety test) and reckless driving, which she pled guilty to on February 29, 2008. The other counts were dropped.

The Nevada-born actress received a five-day jail sentence, six months' unsupervised probation and a $410 fine.

Known best for her role on Gilligan's Island as gingham-dress wearing Kansas farm-girl Mary Ann Summers in 98 episodes from 1964-1967, Wells also appeared on 77 Sunset Strip, Hawaiian Eyes and other TV shows from 1961-2019.

Gilligan's Island also starred Bob Denver as Gilligan, Alan Hale Jr. as Captain Grumby, Jim Backus as Thurston Howell III, Tina Louise as Ginger Grant, Natalie Wentworth as Lovie and Russell Johnson as Professor Hinkley. Except for Louise, who's 86, everyone from the show's main cast has now died.

Wells suffered from Covid-19. She was 82.
