Maine City Pushes for Marijuana Legalization

MPP Maine
Ads are appearing in Portland in support of Question 1.

'Potland' is usually reserved for Oregon's largest city, but if voters in Portland, Maine pass a ballot to legalize marijuana in Nov. 5, they can at least share the stony title.

The initiative (Question 1) would allow the possession of up to 2.5 ounces of pot for adult recreational use without any possible penalty. The possession of up to 2.5 ounces is currently decriminalized in Maine, punishable by civil violation. Maine is also among the 20 states that have approved medical marijuana. There's one dispensary - Wellness Connection- in Portland.

Civil violations for marijuana are already relatively low in Portland. There were just 53 in the last year, and 68 the year before that.

Update: A month before the election, MPP launched an ad campaign for placement on buses and at bus stops (right).
