Boston Freedom Rally Gets Go-Ahead from City

Boston Freedom Rally
The Boston Freedom Rally has taken place in Boston Commons for the last 23 years. The 24th is scheduled for this weekend.

Just one day prior to the 24th Annual Boston Freedom Rally, the city finally granted the necessary permits for the event to take place on Sept. 14 (from high noon to 6 pm), and Sept. 15 (noon to 3 pm). Originally, the permit only allowed for a Saturday rally.

Traditionally held on the third Saturday in September in Boston Common by MASS CANN/NORML, this years organizers planned to add Sunday to the rally schedule of bands and speakers.

"MASS CANN/NORML is singled-out for special bad treatment from the City of Boston administrators who don't appreciate the fact that Boston Common was America's first public place and is, therefore, the first place on earth where freedom of speech and freedom of assembly were guaranteed," treasurer Bill Downing coomented before his organization filed an injunction on Thursday. On Friday, a judge granted the permits, albiet for fewer hours than requested.
