Dianne Feinstein: Old Guard, Old Opinions

Three-term California Sen, Dianne Feinstein still believes marijuana is a gateway to harder drugs.

At 80, Sen. Dianne Feinstein is among Congress' senior Senators. So we shouldn't expect much from her when it comes to to the issue of marijuana legalization, which she opposes.

In an interview, Feinstein gives two reasons for her opposition:

• "The risk of people using marijuana and driving is very substantial."

• "I saw a lot of where people began with marijuana and went onto hard drugs" (when she was on the California Women's Board of Terms and Paroles in the '60s).

Feinstein was elected to the Senate in 1992. She chairs the Drug Caucus on International Narcotics Control and the Select Committee on Intelligence, and sits on the Judiciary and Appropriations Committees. Feinstein's the former mayor of San Francisco.
