Rep. Blumenauer Speaks at Portland Pot Rally

Two weeks after the 4/20 holiday, legalizers around the world marched and rallied to end cannabis prohibition on Saturday. Among the highlights was pro-pot Congressman Earl Blumenauer's speech in downtown Portland, Oregon.

Protestors converged in Pioneer Courthouse Square at 11 am. After several speeches, the crowd marched around Portland and returned to the Courthouse, where Rep. Blumenauer gave a 15-minute speech under a tent.

"Wednesday on the floor of the House I had amendment that would have allowed our veterans to be able to talk to their VA doctors about marijuana," the House rep explained (see his enire speech above). "Why should our veterans be treated as second-class citizens in those states where medical marijuana is legal? Why should they not be able to talk to their primary doctor about whether it's right for them or wrong. We weren't successful, but we got 195 votes, including two dozen Republicans. We're on the move in the United States Congress."

Blumenauer is one of Congress' major marijuana advocates. The Oregon rep has called for rescheduling cannabis and co-sponsored the Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act with Colorado Rep. Jared Polis. He's up for reelection in November.

The weekend events, known as the Global Marijuana March, took place in hundreds of cities internationally. Check out the list here.
