A 420 Pot Plantation Grows Outside Mexico's Senate

First reported as a "marijuana plantation" growing outside the Mexican Senate in Mexico City in July.

Seven months since marijuana seeds were planted in a park outside the Senate in Mexico City, the garden dubbed Plantón 420 has become a haven for canna-activists and a modest tourist attraction.

The original news of 420 marijuana plants growing in a section of the Louis Pasteur Park outside the Mexican Senate seemed unusual when the The Hill reported it in July. That's a lot of pot plants in the middle of Mexico City. Mexico's 24 Horas called it a "marijuana plantation," which turned out to be a more accurate description.

Now named Plantón 420, the garden has become a attraction in downtown Mexico City.

Possession of five grams in currently legal in Mexico, even though the Mexican Supreme Court has ruled marijuana use is protected by the constitution. A legalization bill is expected in Congress by December 15.

According to the 24 Horas article:

"On one side of the Senate of the Republic, a marijuana plantation has begun to grow, due to the weather conditions in Mexico CityIn the Luis Pasteur Park, which is located next to the Senate, several groups settled in a camp earlier this year to demand that legislators regularize cannabis.

"For this reason, in two square meters of the public garden, the collectives carried out the planting with the aim of making it the 'first non-clandestine planting,' say the activists.

The "420 marijuana plants" apparently came from this tweet:

"A whole marijuana garden grows in front of the Senate of the Republic. The rain and warm weather helped the growth of 420 marijuana plants in the Luis Pasteur Park, adjacent to the Senate of the Republic."

Interestingly, 420 founders The Waldos would meet at the Louis Pasteur statue in San Rafael, CA at 4:20 pm.

420 in Spanish is cuatro cien y veinte.
