First Legal Adult-Use Cannabis Store Opens in the Bronx

As a Bronx, NY resident I'm happy to report the borough now has one legal adult-use cannabis store – Statis – located at 817 E. Tremont Ave. It opened on July 6 with speeches and media attention.

Statis is minority owned by Emely Chavez and Angel Turuseta, who was previously convicted on a marijuana charge in New York. This qualified them as justice-involved and hence the license to operate.

The store is in a shopping district in the West Farms section that also has a Foot Locker. Besides the bright blue Statis logo, the building is nondescript. Inside there are colorful product displays and some cool paintings.

Since Flower House had a table there showing off various bright green strains (mostly indicas), I decided to buy a quarter-ounce of Gelato for $70 (plus $9.10 in state and local taxes). It was such a great deal because all the buds were "smalls." I usually don't buy smalls but that's what I paid for (the eighth was $50 and not smalls). Live and learn.

While there were several flower options, vape carts and gummies, only one concentrate was on the menu.

Statis is a pop-up and will move to its permanent location at 1412 Jerome Ave. in the Mott Haven section in the fall. The next legal store in the Bronx is expected to open in September in the Hunts Point section.

Bronx residents (56% are Hispanic or Latino) should support this shop and others like it rather than the unlicensed ones across the street and down the block selling for less.
