At last night's Democratic candidates' debate, Bernie Sanders made the only reference to marijuana, and it was a powerful one.
Media outlets are reporting that eight of the 20 medical marijuana dispensaries licensed to do business in New York State opened on Jan. 7. In the Big Apple, Columbia Care debuted its Union Square location. Three more stores are slated to open - in Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx.
Out of 43 applicants, there were five winners in New York's medical marijuana sweepstakes. Many of the state's 20 licensed stores are expected to open this month.
Cannabis was in the headlines this year, but a lot of the news was negative, like the defeat of Issue 3 in Ohio, the increase in arrests and the continuation of player suspensions for pot in the NFL. The good news? Bernie Sanders took a stand against prohibition, Jamaica and Delaware removed penalties for possession, and DEA head Michele Leonhart was ousted.
Harborside Health Center co-owner Steve DeAngelo brought his book tour to New York Dec. 17 where he did a reading from "The Cannabis Manifesto" at a HighNY-sponsored event.
