Dead & Company Light Up New Year's Eve with Giant Joint

What's left of the Grateful Dead made a grand marijuana gesture during last night's epic NYE Dead & Company show at the L.A. Forum.

Shirley Halperin reports at billboard.com:

"A giant flying joint crisscrossed the arena with Jerry Garcia's daughter Trixie and longtime Dead representative Bernie Cahill at the steer and the Star Wars theme as its soundtrack. The faux-burning lit end, fashioned in the shape of a rose (a key image in Dead iconography), landed on the stage with a cloud of smoke, where it was greeted by former NBA star and longtime Deadhead Bill Walton – dressed as Father Time and brandishing a lightsaber – along with friends and extended family members in costume. (According to an insider, Mickey Hart worked up the idea.) The chaotically colorful scene even had John Mayer craning his iPhone to capture the moment."

Three original members of the Grateful Dead – Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Hart – are currently performing shows as Dead & Company with Mayer in Garcia's guitar slinger role. Mayer told the crowd at the end of the three-set concert, "We'll see you next year," meaning there will be more Dead & Company shows in 2016.
