High at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: When Dave Grohl Smoked a Joint and Practically Missed the Finale

Earlier this week the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame announced the 2021 inductees. They are: Tina Turner, The Go-Go’s, Carole King, Todd Rundgren, Jay-Z and Foo Fighters.

Dave Grohl fronts Foo Fighters. He was formerly the drummer with Nirvana. Grohl was previously inducted as a member of Nirvana in 2014.

The next year, Grohl was invited to perform at the show with Joan Jett, who was being inducted by Miley Cyrus.

Grohl recalls in Rolling Stone

“The ceremonies can be painfully long. Fortunately, Joan Jett’s performance was at the top of the show. We performed, and after a few hours, I went up to the dressing room to drink and wound up smoking a joint with Joan and Miley Cyrus.”

Not your typical stoner, the joint hit Grohl hard. “I was tripping balls,” he said.

Grohl was so stoned he nearly missed the “A Little Help from My Friends” finale with Ringo Starr.

“A producer was running around looking for me to sing the finale of ‘With a Little Help From My Friends,'" Grohl explained. "He ran up to me and was like, ‘Dave! Dave! You’ve gotta be onstage in the next two minutes! We’re doing the big finale!’ I couldn’t imagine being onstage. I walked out there so high that I hid behind Stevie Wonder.”

Some people have questioned the Foo Fighters’ induction, saying other more classic acts deserve to be in the Hall before relatively newer bands like the Foos. Grohl is clearly the greatest rock performer of this generation. Like Don Henley, the Eagles’ drummer, Grohl waited for his opportunity to step forward and take the lead. Unfortunately, it was a result of Kurt Cobain’s death

Despite the band’s mega-success since forming in 1995, the Foos have only had two major hit singles, “Learn to Fly” and “Best of You.” However, the majority of their 10 albums have gone No. 1.

Of the other inductees, Jay-Z sold drugs before he became a renowned rapper and now has the cannabis company Monogram. Several members of The Go-Go’s had drug issues. Surely, Turner, King and Rundgren smoked a few joints in their lives. However, except for Jay-Z, none of this year’s inductees are specifically associated with cannabis.

This 2021 induction ceremony will be held in Cleveland - home of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame - on October 30. Presumably, this time Dave Grohl will be able to find his way to the stage.
