CBD Patches: Everything You Need to Know

Hapihemp CBD patches get placed on the bicep.

CBD patches are one of the most unique ways to deliver CBD. What other method allows you to take CBD in a controlled way all through the day? What other CBD form lets you absorb CBD into your system even overnight? How else can you get CBD discreetly and efficiently?

What are CBD Patches?

Simply put, they're transdermal patches that work through your skin and are filled with CBD.

CBD patches are not unlike nicotine patches, and work in much the same way. CBD patches release their contents through your skin and into your bloodstream over typically a 24-48 hour period.

CBD patches may also contain other cannabinoids that can increase their effectiveness. These products are known as broad and full-spectrum CBD patches as opposed to CBD isolate patches.

You may be aware of the patch immediately after application, but soon enough, you’ll forget it's even there. This makes patches perfect for use throughout the day and even while you’re fast asleep.

What is CBD?

CBD is an abbreviation of the compound cannabidiol. It's part of a family of compounds known as cannabinoids, and in CBD products is the most prevalent cannabinoid. In CBD isolate products it's the only cannabinoid.

Hemp plants are classified as containing less than 0.3% THC and have much higher concentrations of CBD than in the marijuana plant. That’s why hemp plants are universally used for the production of CBD products. The cannabinoid THC is responsible for the “high” effect that most people associate with smoking marijuana.

CBD may also contain other cannabinoids like CBN and CBG.

How Do Cannabinoids Work on the Human Body?

CBD and other cannabinoids interact with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS acts as a set of receptors that interact with cannabinoids that are consumed or absorbed. These cannabinoids, in combination with the ECS, are responsible for many different processes, including sleep, pain, inflammation and immune response.

How Does CBD Work with a Transdermal Patch?

The patch is applied to the skin, often somewhere like the flat part of your bicep. Then, the CBD is released over a period of time (usually a day or two) through the skin and into your bloodstream.

The main issue with CBD working in this way is that it is not typically water-soluble. Therefore, the CBD (and any other cannabinoids in the patch) must be made able to dissolve in water so it can pass through the skin easily.

What Are You Using CBD Patches For?

Common uses of CBD include pain, anxiety, inflammation and sleep. In many ways, these are all interrelated.

Imagine for a moment trying to get to sleep and not being able to. What are the reasons for this? Perhaps your knee’s a bit puffy from a long walk earlier in the day and its causing you some discomfort. Or maybe there’s something on your mind that you're finding difficult to put aside. CBD can help you to relieve these issues.

CBD patches are particularly useful for sleep by reducing the impact of certain symptoms in the first place and also helps you stay asleep.

How Good Are Your CBD Patches?

The first thing you should consider is ingredients. Products labeled as including “hemp oil” do not necessarily have CBD as an ingredient. If they don't contain water-soluble CBD, they're not going to work very well.

Another thing to consider is whether the product you're buying has an accompanying lab report. CBD brands should provide lab reports for all of their products so that you can check what the companies claim.
