Brody Uses Ibogaine on 'Homeland'

The controversial addiction therapy ibogaine is given to Brody (Damian Lewis) to help him kick opiates on a recent episode of Homeland.

"There is another option: ibogaine, a drug based on a Nigerian plant," Dar Adal (F. Murray Abraham) recommends. "It dramatically accelerates the withdrawal process and kills the addiction."

CIA director Saul Berenson (Mandy Patimkin) is warned of the side effects: "violent mind-bending hallucinations," and gives the go-ahead.

We don't see the ibogaine administered, but Brody freaks out on it. "What the fuck did you give me?" he asks hysterically. Brody breaks a chair and stabs his arm with the broken shard. But apparently it does indeed help him get back on his feet and participate in Saul's latest "play" - an attempt to infiltrate Iran's high command.

Watch Homeland, Sundays at 9 pm ET, on Showtime.
