TV Review: Dennis Leary in 'Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll'

Dennis Leary plays Johnny Rock in "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll" on FX.

On July 16, the first episode of Dennis Leary's new series on FX hit the charts with a bullet. In Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, Leary plays washed-up musician Johnny Rock. After years of debauchery, he's trying to get his career back on track.

The fictional story goes that Rock's band the Heathens broke up just as their debut album was being released in the '80s because Rock was banging his guitar player's girlfriend. Thirty years later, said guitarist, Flash (John Corbett), is playing with Lady Gaga while Rock can barely make ends meet. Suddenly, his wealthy long-lost daughter Gigi (Elizabeth Gillies) enters the picture. An aspiring singer herself, she wants dad and Flash to write her some songs.

Rock's a meaty role for Leary to dig into, plus there are plenty of references to pot, coke and pills in this promising series.

Watch Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll on FX, Thursdays at 10 pm ET.
