Barry Jenkins' film follows a young African-American boy as he grows up in three stages. Chiron, whose mother Paula (Naomie Harris) is a crack addict, endures years of bullying and develops an affection for another man. The film scored eight nominations, for Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali, who plays Juan) and Supporting Actor (Naomie Harris).

Mortensen plays Ben, a back-to-the land home schooler in Matt Ross' film. He's raising six children without their mother, who has passed away, in a blissful setting, but refuses to let the kids connect with modern life. En route to the burial in their hippie bus, a number of issues surface, especially at the home of Ben's in-laws. No dope is smoked in this otherwise counterculture flick.

In 13th, Ava DuVernay explores the mass incarceration of African-American men during the drug war. In David McKenzie's Hell or High Water, Bridges plays a Texas Ranger who tracks down several banks robbers. Also, Golden Globe winner Zootopia, which features Tommy Chong and a pot leaf microphone, is up for Best Animated Feature.

With 14 nominations, Damien Chazelle's musical La La Land is the favorite to sweep the Oscars. Both La La Land and Moonlight won Best Movie awards at the recent Golden Globes.
