Party in the Woods: Magic Mushrooms on 'Yellowjackets'

Magic mushrooms play a major role in the outcome of Season 1 of Yellowjackets on Showtime.

The 10-episode series traces the lives of a girl's high school soccer team after their plane crashed in 1996 leaving them marooned in the woods far from civilization. They're not discovered until 19 months later. Four of the survivors attend the 25th reunion. Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis, Melanie Lynskey and Tawny Cypress play the survivors.

It's a dark story about survival of the fittest, similar to Lord of the Flies. The girls each have their own issues and the few guys (two coaches) are coveted.

In Episode 9 ("Doomcoming"), the teens hold a party, during which they inadvertently consume psilocybin mushrooms. Well, Misty (Samantha Hanratty) knows because she brought her stash to the party.

"Has someone seen the mushrooms?" Mindy asks.

"Yeah, you were holding out on us," Mari (Alexa Barajas) says. "They're in the soup."

"I was saving them for a special occasion," she responds knowingly.

The scene goes in multiple directions, though few realize what's happening. An orgy of sorts takes place, one of the male characters Ben (Steven Kruger) reveals he's gay and several of the girls fight over the last hetero dude, Travis (Kevin Alves).

Mindy: "They were my mushrooms and you stole them and put them in your stupid soup."

It takes until Episode 10 ("SIc Transit Gloria Mundi"), the season finale, for everyone to learn they'd been dosed.

"There's stuff we regret last night on account of the 'shrooms," Ben says.

"You drugged us?"

"No, I didn't," Mindy explains. "It was an accident. They were meant for Ben. They were my mushrooms and you stole them and put them in your stupid soup."

Before that scene can play out any longer, a bear shows up and the mushrooms are a not-so-distant memory.
