Awards Season 2022: 'CODA' Pulls Oscars Upset

2022 Awards Season winners: "CODA," "Dopesick" and "Don’t Look Up."

The saga about a mostly deaf family CODA won Best Picture at the 2022 Oscars, capping off an exciting awards season.

CODA's female director Sian Heder and supporting actor Troy Kotsur took numerous awards en route to the film's huge victory at the Academy Awards on March 27. Kotsur's character Frank Rossi uses medical cannabis. The show was marred by Will Smith's slap of Chris Rock during the Documentary category announcement. 

Andy McKay's Don't Look Up earned three Oscar noms. The comet satire took the Writer's Guild's Best Original Screenplay award and received Golden Globe nominations for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, Best Screenplay (McKay and David Sirota) and Best Actress and Actor (Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio). The duo plays astronomers who discover the comet. In a stressful moment, Kate (Lawrence) says, "I've got to get high." Soon, she's hitting a pot pipe. Don't Look Out was shut out at the Globes. West Side Story was named Best Movie Musical or Comedy. 

Michael Keaton won three awards for his depiction of Dr. Sam Finnix in Hulu's Dopesick: a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild award and a Critics Choice award.The opioids drama received three Golden Globe nominations for Best Limited Series, Best Performance by an Actor, Limited Series (Keaton) and Best Supporting Actress, Television (Kaitlyn Dever) in a Limited Series.

Dopesick depicts Purdue Pharma and its devastating promotion of OxyContin as a non-addictive painkiller. Dr. Finnix is courted by Purdue and eventually gets hooked on the meds he's prescribing to locals like Betsy (Dever), a coal miner who gets hurt on the job. Rosario Dawson as DEA agent Bridget Meyer also deserved a nom for her dogged advocacy.

More Golden Globes

• CelebStoner Kristen StewartBest Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama for her portrayal of Lady Diana in Spencer. She lost to Nicole Kidman who plays Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos.

CODA: Noms for Best Picture and Best Supportng Actor (Kotsur).

Brian CoxBest Performance by an Actor in a Television Series, Drama for his role as patriarch Logan Roy in Succession. Cox recently stated about cannabis: "It's absolutely great and I recommend it to everyone - get stoned." He lost to fellow Succession cast member Jeremy Strong

• Jennifer Hudson: Nominated for her powerful rendition of Aretha Franklin in Respect. Rachel Zegler, who plays Maria in West Side Story, won this category.

The Golden Globes were announced on social media without a show or live award presentations on January 9.

SAG Awards 

CODA won for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture Outstanding Performance by a Male  Actor in a Supporting Role (Kotsur).

The Screen Actors Guild nominated Don't Look Up in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture category. 

Keaton, Cox and Strong were nominated in the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor TV categories. Dopesick's Keaton took the blue trophy for Miniseries or Television Movie; it's his second win of the awards season.

Jean Smart, who portrays stand-up comic Deborah Vance on Hacks, won for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series. Tokin Woman recently posted about marijuana use on the show: "In Episode 6 ('New Eyes'), Deborah has an 'eyelid refresh' at a spa/surgery center and takes Ava (Hannah Einbinder) along for the weekend. Deborah... agrees to take a cannabis gummy to deal with her pain when offered by Ava, who joins her. The two are soon laughing together and sharing insights about their lives, something women tend to do when they use cannabis together (but is rarely seen on TV or in films)."  

Hacks lost to Ted Lasso in the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series category.

Jennifer Hudson received her first awards-season recognition for her powerful rendition of Aretha Franklin in Respect in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor movie category. Cynthia Erivo, who portrays Aretha Franklin in the Genius: Aretha miniseries, was nominated in the Outstanding Female Actor in the TV category as well. Both lost. 

The SAG Awards were announced on TNT on February 27.

BAFTA Awards

CODA won Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Kotsur). The British version of the Oscars also gave out three noms to Don't Look Up - Best Film, Leading Actor (DiCaprio) and Original Screenplay (McKay).

The BAFTA winners were announced on March 13. 

 

Critics Choice Awards

Michael Keaton was named Best Actor in Limited Series or Movie Made for Televison for Dopesick. Kaitlyn Dever was also nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for Dopesick, which lost to Mare of Easttown for Best Limited Series.

Jean Smart won Best Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks. Hannah Einberger from Hacks was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Hacks lost to Ted Lasso in the Best Comedy Series category.

Don't Look Up was nominated for Best Picture, Best Acting Ensemble, Best Comedy, Best Song ("Just Look Up") and Best Score.

CODA was also nominated for Best Picture. Troy Kotsur won for Best Supporting Actor.

The Critics Choice Awards were announced on March 13.

Producers Guild Awards

CODA won for Outstanding Producers of Theatrical Motion Pictures. 

Dopesick was nominated for the Davild L. Wolper Award for Outstanding Producer of a Limited or Anthology Series. The show lost to Mare of Easttown

Tom Petty, Somwhere You Remain Free: The Making of Wildflowers won for Outstanding Producer of a Televised or Streamed Motion Picture.

The Beatles: Get Back earned the Outstanding Producer of Non-Fiction Television award. 

The Producers Guild Awards were annnounced on March 12.

Academy Awards

CODA won for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay (Sian Heder) and Best Supporting Actor (Troy Kotsur). Kotsur's character smokes pot in the movie.

Don't Look Up lost in the following categories: Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing.

Nominated for Best Actress in Spencer, Kristen Stewart lost to Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye).

Dune had eight noms and five wins: Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Sound, Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Best Hairstyling (also nominated for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film Editing).

The winners were announced on ABC on March 27.
