One of Netflix's most watched series, Season 2 of Ginny & Georgia, has something for everyone.
It's like Parenthood with a major screw loose. That screw is Georgia, played powerfully with a Southern accent by Brianne Howey. She's often described as a "force" who her own daughter can hardly deal with.
Georgia has a lot of secrets. She's twice divorced and is being harassed by her previous husband Gil (Aaron Aashmore) who's just out of jail on an embezzling charge which Georgia had something to do with. They have a son, Austin (Diesel La Torraca). Ginny's father Zion (Nathan Mitchell) lives near them in fictional Wellsbury, MA.
Season 1 left off with Georgia getting involved with Mayor Paul Randolph (Scott Porter). Word had gotten around town about her past and a private investigator was digging into it.
That's the adult story. The other half is Gossip Girl meets Euphoria. New in town in Season 1, Ginny now has a full circle of friends and a stoner boyfriend Marcus (Felix Mallard), who lives across the street and regularly sneaks over to spend nights with Ginny. Both are damaged. We know why Ginny has been burning herself, leading to therapy sessions, but Marcus' depression is another matter. Pot, pills, friends and family barely help him navigate the world.
Episodes 1, 3, 4, 5 and 10 feature pot smoking. The kids like to passs joints and pipes in a basement That '70 Show/That '90s Show style. They also drink beer and alcohol, like the parents. A couple of times Marcus and Georgia share a joint, which upsets Ginny who says sarcastically, "This is really fit mothering."
When Marcus shows up drunk one day at Wellsbury High, his twin sister Maxine (Sarah Waisglass) escorts him home after making an opt comparison: "Where do you think we are, Euphoria? Let's go!"
Whereas the high-school kids dominate Euphoria, Georgia & Ginny is family conscious almost to a fault. Mama Bear Georgia will do anything - and that means anything - to protect her kids. These are often impulsive, questionable decisions that create distance between the two principal characters. But like Charlotte (Sofia Hublitz) in Ozark, who gradually begins to resemble her criminal-minded mother Wendy (Laura Linney), Ginny gives Georgia slack as they grow to understand each other better. But Ginny remains unsettled to the very end of an entertaining second season.
