Tag Winbury is an enigma. He and his bestselling author wife Greer have a mansion on Nantucket in Netflix's The Perfect Couple. None of of it seems to be of his doing. He doesn't appear to have a job or profession. Tag (Liev Schreiber) likes to smoke joints (RAW cones preferred), drink Scotch and hit golf balls into the ocean. Oh, and he's also a womenizer.
That's the set-up for the six-episode series starring Schreiber, Nicole Kidman as Greer, Dakota Fanning as daughter-in-law Abby and The White Lotus' Meghann Fahy as Merritt Monaco, who dies the night of the rehearsal dinner for son Benji and fiancé Amelia's wedding, Merritt was Amelia's bestie and maid of honor.
It's a regular whodunnit on the island. The Winbuys are an extremely entitled family, like the snobs in Saltburn or The Gentlemen. Their world revolves around Greer. She has a new book coming out and her team is busily planning the launch the week after the wedding (which is canceled). The three Winbury sons don't get along and constantly snipe at each other.
Bride-to be Amelia, who's from a middle-class background at best, and a team of cops investigate the crime. Amelia blurts out awkward probing questions at family gatherings and Chief Dan Carter (Michael Beach) and Det. Nikki Henry (Donna Lynne Champion) piece together the complicated case with customary cop banter.
Everyone in the family has a secret or two and all is revealed as the episodes roll by. It's a fun game of guessing who the murderous mastermind is.
Tag's one of the suspects since he was having an affair with Merritt and made her pregnant. The weed seems to help guide him through the family intrigue. He's never without a joint, even offering it to maid Gosia (Irina Dubova). Greer takes a hit at one point as they relax on the veranda. It's Kidman's first puff on screen since Eyes Wide Shut (1999).
Prescription drugs play a larger role in the story. Son Thomas (Jack Reynor) is the biggest pill popper and Merritt's death is partially atttributed to barbituates found in her body in the toxicology report. But who dosed her? It will take five hours to find out.
