NBA Suspends Hornets' Al Jefferson for Weed

Former NBA All-Star and current Charlotte Hornet, Al Jefferson, will have to sit out five game because of his use of marijuana.

It's three strikes and you're benched in the NBA when it comes to using illegal substances, including cannabis. For Hornet forward Al Jefferson, his third violation has resulted in a five-game suspension, announced Dec. 9.

The 11-year pro failed a drug test for marijuana. His previous violations were a DUI in 2010 and his first failed drug test, punishable by a $25,000 fine.

“I’m a man and I have to take full responsibility for my actions,” Jefferson says about the suspension. “I have to ask for forgiveness and put it behind me and try to move on."

Jefferson was drafted by Boston in 2004 straight out of high school. After three seasons with the Celtics, he was traded to Minnesota, where he had his best year – 23 ppg and 11 rpg – in the 2008-09 season. He's since played for Utah and Charlotte, who signed him as a free agent in 2014. He's currently averaging 13.7 ppg and 6.4 rpg. The suspension will begin once Jefferson recovers from a calf injury.
