Swimming to Australia: Olympic Medalist Swept Up in Ice Raid

Scott Miller in the pool and with his Olympic silver medal

Australia's bad boy of swimming has been arrested again.

On February 16, Scott Miller was busted in Sydney and charged with "directing a criminal group which was allegedly distributing large quantities of methamphetamines to towns in regional New South Wales," 9News reports. An amount of Ice valued at $2 million was confiscated during a search of his apartment along with two kilos of heroin and $75,000.

The oft-arrested swimmer rose to fame in the '90s when he won a silver medal in the 100-meter butterfly race at the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta. It would be Miller's 15 minutes of fame.

After failing a drug test for marijuana and a two-month suspension by the International Swimming Association, his aquatic career barely stayed afloat. Once Miller was out of the pool for good, he became the target of police inquiries, arrested in 2008, 2013 and 2019 all for drugs. Each time Miller was spared prison time.

"I'm a drug taker," he told 60 Minutes Australia (watch below) in 2020, while denying he sold drugs for profit. Cocaine, Ecstasy and meth (known as Ice in Oceania) are his drugs of choiice. During the interview, MIller said Ice was his "addiction of the moment."

At presstime, Miller was being held in custody at the Newtown police station.
