Review: '21 and Over'

21 and Over
Three Stoners: Miles Teller, Justin Chon and Sklyer Astin in "21 and Over"

The first stoner movie of 2013 is a fairly typical college party flick. Mild-mannered Jeff Chang (Justin Chon) is visited by two high school friends who want to show him a good time on his 21st birthday.

Part Animal House, Harold & Kumar and Project X, Jon Lucas and Scott Moore's 21 and Over features Miles Teller (from Project X) as the fast-talking instigator Miller and Skyler Astin as his more subdued bud Casey. They arrive at Chang's campus somewhere in Washington State and immediately stir up trouble between Chang and his strict dad who wants him to be a doctor. The next morning Chang has a big med-school interview.

Predictably, the guys go on a wild bender the includes consuming mass quantities of alcohol, breaking into a girls dorm, messing up a pep rally with a raging bull, jumping out windows, beer pong (natch) and one love interest, the perpetually smiling Nicole (Sarah Wright).

Teller is Kumar to Chang's Harold. His first question when they bust in on Chang is, "You got any weed?" He doesn't. The only pot-smoking scene occurs at a frat party where stoners pass a joint and then take advantage of a very wasted Chang.

Rather than abide by his father's wishes, Jeff Chang (his full name is repeated throughout the movie) rebels after he sobers up. Skylar accomplishes his goal, Casey gets the girl and Jeff Chang, well, it appears won't becoming a doctor anytime soon. Cool, dude.
