John Hawkes plays jazz pianist Joe Albany in "Low Down." Elle Fanning’s his daughter, Amy Jo.

9. Low Down

Real-life jazz pianist Joe Albany (played by John Hawkes) struggles to make ends meet in Los Angeles in the '70s. Based on his daughter's memoir, Amy Jo (Elle Fanning) digs the life of jam sessions, pot and booze, but heroin is dad's big problem. He's in and out of jail and travels back and forth to Europe. Jeff Preiss' depiction is predictably dark and seedy, and justifiably so.
