STONER COMEDIES

Super Troopers 2

The traditional male stoner-buddy comedy may have run its course. This year’s entries, Super Troopers 2 and Game Over, Man!, were both disappointing. Jay Chandrasekhar’s Super Troopers 2 did well at the box office ($30.6 million), but fell way short of the original in terms of premise and laughs. The Broken Lizard cast return as does Brian Cox, leader of the New York police squad that decides to forge into Canada and claim a piece of land just on the other side of the border. It’s a silly concept that leads to a lot of Canadian gags. Rather than weed, the kooky cops get loaded on various pills confiscated from a smuggler’s truck. Despite its big 4/20 release, Super Troopers 2 is a bit of a bummer.

Game Over, Man!

The Workaholics dudes, known for their Comedy Central series, make a stab at big-screen comedy in Kyle Newacheck's Game Over, Man! Like on the TV show, Adam Devine, Anders Holm (he wrote it) and Blake Anderson play themselves - three bumbling stoners who, in this case, are working as hotel housekeepers. When a terrorist group tries to take over the hotel, the dopey trio come to the rescue. The video game angle is about one they create called Skintendo. Holms constantly puffs a cloud-producing vape, but no joints or bongs are smoked. The stunts and shootouts add little to this over-the-top farce. Netflix
