The Quiet One

Rolling Stones former bassist Bill Wyman is the subject of Oliver Murray’s thorough documentary. Now 83, Wyman joined the Stones in 1962 and played with them through the 1989 Steel Wheels tour. The group’s videographer and archivist, he has a deep knowledge about the band’s history. Much of the B-roll footage and audio is his. Locked in the pocket, he and drummer Charlie Watts provided the propulsive Stones backbeat. Unlike his drug-taking mates, Wyman eschewed such activities, perhaps due to him being seven years older than Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. “I didn’t want anything to do with drugs,” he recalls. “I had a puff of one burning joint they had. Apparently, it had animal tranquilizer in it.” This precedes a somber discussion of guitarist Brian Jones’s death. Wyman went on to found the Rhythm Kings, an R&B/jazz band; he last recorded with them in 2018. The last time he played with the Stones was in 2012. After several marriages, Wyman settled down and raised a family. He must be doing something right. PrimeYouTube
