Will 'History' Repeat Itself? Mel Brooks' 1981 Comedy Features One of the Best Movie Pot Scenes Ever

Gregory Hines as Josephus holds the Mighty Joint in "History of the World, Part 1."

A sequel to Mel Brooks' History of the World, Part I is in the works. Hulu has ordered eight episodes of History of the World, Part II to be written by Brooks, who's 95, and other comics like Nick Kroll and Wanda Sykes.

“I can’t wait to once more tell the real truth about all the phony baloney stories the world has been conned into believing are history,” Brooks crowed to Variety.

History mocks numerous eras such as the Spanish Inquistion, the French Revolution and the Stone Age. But it's the Roman Empire section of the film that makes it a stoner movie.

Chased by Roman soldiers, Josephus (a slave played by Gregory Hines) insists Comicus (Mel Brooks) pull their horse-drawn wagon over. He sees some pot plants and runs over to them. "The nose knows!" Josephus brags. "Roman Red! A whole field of wacky weed!" He takes a long sheet of papyrus from the wagon and rolls a five-foot joint. Then, Josephus hops back on the wagon and declares: "We are now armed with Mighty Joint!" The wagon takes off trailed by the pot smoke from the now-lit stogie. Of course, the smoke gets the soldiers stoned and they lose track of their mission. The leader climbs out of his chariot and commands: "You men go northward, you go southward. I'm going to walk around here in a circle."

It's a scene right out of Cheech & Chong's Up and Smoke, Next Movie and Nice Dreams, which all came out around the same time. In fact, High Times lists it as one of the Top 10 pot scenes in '80s movies.

You have to figure cannabis will somehow play a role in Part II.
