'Animal House' at 45: Where Are They Now?

John Belushi in "Animal House": "Food fight!"

National Lampoon's Animal House was released 45 years ago on July 28, 1978. It was the first in a series of National Lampoon movie comedies.

Featuring a cast of relative unknowns except for John Belushi and Donald Sutherland, many of the actors were appearing in their first film. It's directed buy Jon Landis and co-written by Harold Ramis, Doug Kenney and Chris Miller.

The premise is the wild-and-crazy Delta frat vs. the straight-laced Omega frat set at fictional Faber College in 1962. The colllege brass prefers the latter frat to the former and punishes Delta for poor grades and a number of pranks. Delta's famous for their toga parties featuring Otis Day & the Knights. Beer, pot and sex are high on their list of priorities, not going to class and graduating on time. They're the bad boys on campus.

Significant scenes include the famous cafeteria food fight, Delta's Otter making it wife Dean Wormer's wife, Bluto peeping at the girls' dorm, students smoking a joint with the prof, the administrative trial against Delta and the outrageous parade ending.

Animal House was a surprise success at the box office, raking in $141 million. It ushered in an era of stoner comedies that followed like Caddyshack, Stripes, National Lampoon's Vacation and Club Paradise.
