5. Caught Stealing
Set in 1998, just three years before 9/11, Darren Aronosky's caper captures the grit and grime of that era before much of Manhattan went upscale as rents soared. Austin Butler stars as Hank Thompson, an East Village bartender who gets mixed up in an Ecstasy deal that leads to a number of beat-downs and murders.
Like in last year's Oscar winner Anora, several Eastern European mobsters seek the money Hank's neighbor has stashed away in a storage room. Even worse, two sadistic Hasidic hitmen played by Liev Schreiber and Vincent D'Onofrio (they look like twins) and Puerto Rican hothead Colorado (Bad Bunny) are also hot on his trail.
Hank does his best to evade them, getting battered and bruised along the way. His GF Yvonne (Zoë Kravitz) valiantly tries to help but becomes collateral damage. Like in Elvis, The Bikeriders and Dune: Part Two, Butler is a stand-out; he's yet to pick a bad role.
