8. In Waves and War

Actual Film/Netflix

According to Jon Shenk and Bonni Cohen, the directors of this documentary, there is a light at the end of the tunnel for suicidal veterans and it's called ibogaine. The African iboga shrub from Gabon "psychologically resets the nervous system," says a rep from Ambio Life Sciences, which operates a clinic in Baja Mexico where the drug is dispensed.

One by one, three damaged Navy SEALs – Marcus Capone, DJ Shipley and Matty Roberts – travel to Mexico for a cure to their PTSD and other battlefield issues. The trips (they take ibogaine and DMT via toad venom over a 12-hour period) are animated and show each soldier free falling until they can steady themselves. While Capone and Shipley become true believers, Roberts struggles with what he calls this "crazy, hippie-ass shit." They're unlikely visitors to the clinic.

Until recently, ibogaine was seen as an addiction interrupter. But there is new evidence that it can benefit those with depression, TBI and Parkinson's. In Waves and War is a solid primer.
